Stretch Marks: Myths And Facts
Reduce The Appearance of Stretch Marks with a Stretch Mark Cream
What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks, called striae by dermatologists, are a form of scarring on the skin that appear reddish at first then fade in time to a whiter color. Stretch marks are caused by damage to the collagen and elastin fibers, a protein mesh network in the skin
which gives it its flexibility and allows it to stretch and recoil back to its original position.
Myth or Fact? Stretch marks are caused only by skin stretching too quickly when you get pregnant or fat.
Myth
It’s commonly believed that stretch marks are only caused by the rapid stretching of the skin when, in fact, a primary cause of stretch marks is hormonal change such as experienced during puberty and body building as well as during pregnancy and weight gain. Stretch marks can even result from taking hormonal birth control pills.

Teenagers may develop stretch marks during puberty when their hormones are changing and often their bodies grow with a sudden spurt. Young women’s breasts may develop very quickly resulting in skin tearing and stretch marks on the breasts and occasionally on the hips. Stretch marks may
appear on young men on their buttocks.
Body builders, both men and women, can get stretch marks as a result of the sudden muscle mass from constantly lifting heavy weights. That increased muscle mass affects hormone levels and also can damage elastin fibers from stretching and pulling.
75% - 90% of women will develop stretch marks during pregnancy, usually during the sixth and seventh months. The sustained hormonal changes along with greater
stretching forces in the skin result in stretch marks on the abdomen and often on breasts and hips.
Sudden weight gain during any time of life can cause stretch marks. In addition to the stretching of the skin, weight gain affects the body’s hormones. People being treated with steroids for certain conditions will experience hormonal changes and often gain significant weight.
Myth or Fact? Stretch marks can be removed.
Myth
Stretch marks can never be removed entirely. Once stretch marks are present, there
are a few ways to diminish or minimize their appearance including laser surgery, dermabrasion and stretch mark creams. All have some limitations - there are no "perfect" treatments. However, red stretch marks can be reduced, white marks diminished and skin texture can be significantly improved to make it so that stretch marks can’t be seen easily.
Laser surgery can be effective for fair-skinned people with results not as good for people with darker skin. It is expensive and usually takes more than one treatment with costs from $300 - $2500 per treatment, total costs adding up to $5,000 - $10,000.
Micro dermabrasion can greatly improve thin stretch marks so that they are hardly noticeable. The treatments cost about $100 - $200 per treatment and work faster than creams but the results are often no better.
Stretch mark creams have been demonstrated to greatly diminish the appearance of stretch marks when used daily and are the most affordable solution. The creams range from $25 to $150 a bottle, with each lasting about a month.
Myth or Fact? Stretch marks can be prevented.
Fact
The good news is YES, stretch marks can often be prevented! The application of topical creams that are specifically formulated to prevent and treat stretch marks, used daily, are very helpful in preventing stretch marks from happening in the first place. Please note that products containing Retin-A are not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing, so read the labels!
It is recommended to use a good quality stretch mark prevention cream like Revitol Stretch Mark Prevention Cream:

* at the onset of puberty
* if you take hormonal birth control
* at the beginning of pregnancy (or before if you’re planning on becoming pregnant)
* if you begin body building and for the duration of training
* if you are being treated with steroids that can cause hormonal changes and weight gain
Prevention is always the way to go! Use a good cream daily to keep your skin healthy, firm and nourished so you’ll never have to suffer from embarrassing stretch marks.
